Spatial plans and maps often stop at national borders. A striking phenomenon since spatial structures do not stop at the border. Because any alignment is lacking between spatial plans on either side of the border, a spatial incongruency can be observed along the European internal borders.
In his dissertation Pijnenburg places the border in the middle of the plan instead of on the edge. It can be considered as a fresh and innovative view on the design possibilities for the Dutch-German borderland, in which the qualities of the border and the borderland itself are taken as the starting point for design and policy.
His thesis is also a very comprehensive overview of everything relevant written about border-studies, cross-border cooperation, and cross-border spatial planning, and as such a seminal piece of work.
