The book offers an extremely detailed, historical and military account of the fierce struggle that took place in the region between the Peel and the Meuse Valley between September 1944 and March 1945.

While worldwide attention at the time (and still in many history books) was overwhelmingly focused on large, iconic operations such as Market Garden (Arnhem) and the subsequent Battle of the Bulge, a bitter, arduous battle was taking place in North and Central Limburg and the adjacent Brabantse Peel. Because this complicated military campaign never received one official, resounding name, the authors aptly chose the title Battle in the Shadow.
