The village shares its history with the region described in the previous book (Battle in the Shadows). During the Allied advance after Operation Market Garden and the subsequent German counter-attacks in the Peel, extremely heavy fighting took place in and around Neerkant.
At the end of October 1944, the Germans launched an unexpected counter-offensive (the Battle of the Peel). Neerkant was almost completely destroyed by artillery shelling and fierce tank and infantry battles between American units (such as the 7th Armored Division) and German troops.
