Hitler largely wrote the book in 1923-1924, while he was imprisoned in Landsberg Prison after his failed coup (the Beer Hall Putsch).

The book is an ideological manifesto in which he sets out his racial doctrine, his extreme antisemitism, and his geopolitical ambitions (such as Lebensraum in Eastern Europe). It later served as the ideological blueprint for the policies of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust.
