The German connection (Carl Zeiss): Nedinsco was founded in 1921 by the renowned German optical company Carl Zeiss Jena. Due to the strict restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles after World War I, Germany itself was not allowed to produce military goods. Through this Dutch subsidiary in Venlo, Zeiss could continue to manufacture high-quality military optics, such as periscopes for submarines, rangefinders, and binoculars.
