Papyrus scrolls were particularly popular in ancient Egypt. Texts were written on long rolls that had to be unrolled to be read. That worked fine but wasn't very practical when you quickly wanted to find a specific chapter.
The Romans devised the first 'book'
Around the first century AD, a revolutionary idea emerged.
The Romans began to bind loose sheets of parchment together on one side. They called this the codex.
And that looks surprisingly similar to the book as we know it today.

They were easier to carry.
Many historians therefore see the codex as the true precursor of the modern book.
Monks made books by hand
After the fall of the Roman Empire, books became rare.
In monasteries, monks spent days, weeks, or even months hunched over parchment, hand-copying books. Each copy was meticulously decorated with colourful letters, illustrations, and golden details.
Sometimes it took more than a year to complete one book.
As a result, books were enormously valuable. Only churches, wealthy families, and universities could afford a library.
The invention that changed everything
The greatest breakthrough came in the fifteenth century.
Around 1450, Johannes Gutenberg developed a printing press with movable metal type. This allowed books to be printed much faster and cheaper than ever before.
His most famous work is the Gutenberg Bible, which is still considered a masterpiece of typography.
Thanks to the printing press, knowledge, science, and stories spread rapidly across Europe. For the first time, ordinary people increasingly gained access to books.
Gutenberg's invention is therefore considered one of the most important innovations in history.
From luxury product to everyday possession
In the centuries that followed, printing continued to evolve.
Paper became cheaper, printing presses faster, and books more accessible. Where a book used to be reserved only for the elite, eventually almost everyone could fill their own bookshelf.
Books became an important part of education, science, culture, and entertainment.
