'My children eat peat' tells the life story of father Lange and his family. Father and mother Lange have a very special love for each other and for their numerous children. Gradually, stories are told about the pranks of the Lange sons as children or about the amorous adventures of the Lange daughters as women in the making. As the book progresses, the family grows. Ultimately, father and mother Lange have 14 children, 7 boys and 7 girls.

We also see father Lange prosper in his business life until he eventually becomes owner of the Brabantia peat bog. Aunt Agaath also makes an appearance with incoherent statements such as 'Yes, yes, no, no... some people are even dumber than the horse of Our Lord, and that was a donkey!'
