The Little Republic - Lodewijk van Deyssel

De kleine republiek (The Little Republic) is an autobiographical novel by Lodewijk van Deyssel (pseudonym of Karel Alberdingk Thijm). The book was published in 1889 and belongs to naturalism and the Tachtigers movement.

The novel describes life at the Catholic boarding school Rolduc in Kerkrade, where Van Deyssel himself stayed as a boy. The "little republic" in the title refers to the isolated world of that boarding school, with its own rules, hierarchy, and power dynamics
