If loving is a sin... Toon Kortooms
The book is set against the backdrop of the German occupation of the Netherlands. The main character is Liesbeth, a young woman who, amidst the chaos, fear, and moral black-and-white thinking of the war, grapples with her feelings.
In a time when 'good' and 'bad' are sharply drawn boundaries, Liesbeth experiences the inevitable: she falls hopelessly in love. But love does not adhere to the laws of war. Her infatuation brings her into an intense moral conflict with her surroundings, her faith (the then-strict Catholic Brabant life), and her own conscience. The title therefore directly refers to the great question she struggles with: how can something as beautiful and pure as love be 'sinful' or wrong?
